Then there was Bowser’s Castle in Mario Kart Wii which, you may be surprised to know, was literally a slower version of fellow MK Wii track Maple Treeway, played in the minor key. It was clever, but not special.
The problem is, the years haven’t been kind to Bowser; his more fearful elements have ebbed away, though this is undoubtedly due to his odd appearances in other games, such as the time he defeated Toad through the medium of dance in Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix, or those times he proved competent in the 100m at the Olympic Games.
Mario Kart 8 remedied that visually – putting a gigantic Bowser between sections of the track to periodically crush passers-by – but, crucially, musically. Asahi’s unique and strangely glam metal approach to the song goes hard on the traditional four-piece rock band, combined with classic elements from a brass backing section. It made Bowser fear cool again. As a complete package, it may be the best racing experience in the game.
Mount Wario
That said, Nagamatsu’s take on Mount Wario may be the most technically accomplished song in Mario Kart 8. Comprised of four sections reminiscent of the clever work carried out by LucasArts with its cutting-edge iMUSE system, the song follows the flow of the track in half-minute sections:
- Firstly, a friendly, alpine intro as racers are bunched together, discovering the early curves of the track as one;
- A key change down from the initial intro, adding urgency with more instruments as drivers discover a dam and an underground cave;
- A frantic, classic, American-style fast fiddle representing a dangerous, tree-strewn woodland section; and
- A glorious conclusion, taking you through the last couple of simple turns and speed boosts and over the finish line.
The solitary fiddler in particular deserves a medal as big as their head for the fraught and relentless solo, which is so perfect for the forest area that it sounds like Nagamatsu made them do it on the back of a real-life, high-speed go-kart that was being pelted by tortoise shells and boomerangs.
N64 Rainbow Road
Last but not least is a contentious music choice, not least because it wasn’t originally composed for MK8. Even though Nintendo shunned the epic length of the original, three-lap Rainbow Road from Mario Kart 64 by splitting the circuit into three sections for its MK8 re-release, I’m not embarrassed to admit I got genuinely emotional playing it for the first time. It was entirely because of the song remastering.
While the tune was originally created by the excellent Kenta Nagata, its arrangement was only given true power and a real emotional connection with the help of MK8’s full-blown orchestra under Nagamatsu’s supervision. The lone trumpeter regularly provides the true feeling of loneliness that the space-based setting often requires, while the electric guitar powers home just how awesome the racetrack is, and always was.
The similarly brilliant original song was handled with respect, enhancing the source material with care, attention and mind-blowing talent. If anything, the orchestra finally gave N64’s Rainbow Road the send-off it deserved, much like Rainbow Road gave Mario Kart 64 the send-off it deserved.
The re-release of 'Mario Kart 8' on the Switch proved that the console didn't need a new title - just a wider audience for an older classic.
GettyYou may have a soft spot for Ocarina of Time’s beautiful score, the fast and furious tunes of F-Zero X or even the simple ditties of Tetris, and you’d be right to. However, it’s truly difficult, if not outright impossible, to find something that holds a candle to the devotedly curated soundtrack of Mario Kart 8.
It’s consistent, memorable and affectionate, giving the series a true aural identity, as well as a legacy that will be hard to overcome even in future Mario Karts.
Trust me, I thought I’d be the last person to say that 2014 was a ground-breaking year for music.
